STOP PRESS: There is no such thing as a Tier 1 Panel.

Any web search along the lines of “which solar panel should I buy” will probably lead you to some websites which are referring to “Tier 1 Panels” or “Tier 1 Manufacturers”. The concept of a Tier 1 Solar Panel originates from a Bloomberg report in which the researchers listed those Solar Panel Manufacturers which have previously been selected for use in large scale Solar Farm projects.  

What this means is that during the procurement phase of a solar farm infrastructure project, the bank or funding authority behind the project had approved the panel manufacturer in some kind of due diligence process. 

From Bloomberg: 

“Tier 1 module manufacturers are those which have provided own-brand, own-manufacture products to six different [1.5MW+] projects, which have been financed non-recourse by six different banks, in the past two years.” 

However, no one outside of the bank knows what that due diligence process was. And for this reason, we cannot use this Tier 1 status as a recommendation for our own purchase decisions as consumers. We simply do not know what criteria the bank was using to judge the manufacturer. Being a bank, the criteria most likely involved the cash-flow forecast or indebtedness of the manufacturer, rather than the quality or efficiency of an individual product. In other words, the bank is probably mostly concerned that the company will be sufficiently solvent to complete the project order on schedule and to budget. 

Affiliate marketing or advertising websites 

The other thing to be aware of when researching “which solar panel should I buy” on the internet is that the websites you are visiting might not have your best interests at heart. 

Many websites which claim to be review websites, providing “independent” reviews of solar panels, are actually elaborate Affiliate Marketing or Multi Level Marketing websites. Others are websites which are crammed with adverts, and generate an income for the website owner by drawing traffic to the website. 

Whilst the information might be accurate, more usually it isn’t worth paying any attention to.
