The headline news on energy prices is to be welcomed, in particular that the average duel fuel bill will reduce to £1923 in October 2023.
However, the government support package that saw every household receive £400 was a one off benefit, not to be repeated.
So it is more accurate to say that the average bill in October 2022 was £2100 (accounting from the £400 universal subsidy), so the newly announced fall to £1923 is in fact only a fall of £177, or 8.5%.
And it is currently expected that the prices will remain at this elevated level for the rest of the decade.
Obviously the fall in energy prices is welcome news, but in an environment where every other bill has risen, the relief for householders is short lived.
Permanent reductions in household bills
At Brimstone Energy, we take the view that householders should aspire to permanently reduce their energy costs.
This can be done by;
- Taking a “fabric first” approach to insulation. As we often say, insulation is a “no regrets” investment.
- Brimstone Energy can undertake a heat loss survey of your home to identify where to focus your investments in insulation, and how to get ready for a low temperature heating future.
- Invest in a home storage battery. If you can store electricity, whether that is electricity generated from your own solar panels, or whether that is energy imported from the grid at off-peak prices, you’ll save money.
- We equate the investment in Battery Storage to an investment yielding 7% year on year over 10 years.
- This allows you to dramatically cut the cost of electricity in your home. Our use cases demonstrate that the cost of electricity can realistically be cut to £0.15 per day where installed alongside existing solar, which bearing in mind that the standing charge is about £0.35 per day is a pretty extraordinary result.
- Treat your home as an eco-system, where solar, hot water divert, battery storage and enhanced insulation work hand in hand to minimise your energy bills on a permanent basis.
