A disappointing truth: The UK government received no bids in the latest auction for off shore wind power.

  • What do you pay?
• The National Grid has paid your author as much as £4.20 per kWh for electricity (which is discharge from a battery).
  • Do you sell electricity to the grid?
• During the summer, your author’s family home uses about 14 kWh of electricity each day (which includes our hot water). Our solar panels produce at least this much electricity for about 8 months of the year, whilst our battery ensures that the electricity is available when we need it.
• So for about 8 months of the year we do not buy electricity, and only export it.
• Our electric car cost about £8 a week / £400 a year in electricity. We drive 15,000 miles a year.

At Brimstone Energy UK, we judge solar & battery pay back can be as low as 5-6 years where you have a SMART time of use electricity tariff.

However the new Virtual Power Plant activity that has been created by the smart folk at Axle Energy & GivEnergy has blown up these calculations.

The National Grid Electricity Supply Operator “demand flexibility service” has at least 12 sessions planned this winter. If you can sell 9 kWh of electricity to the grid at £4.20 per kWh on three occasions per winter, and £2.10 for the other nine sessions, you’ll pocket £284 per winter.

If we assume this particular set up endures for 12 years, that would give a total pay-out of £3402, significantly helping your return on investment.
